I start with about 24-26 inch 2x2+ blank turning it upwards 4000 rpm
after sanding
I apply 3-4 coats of 100% pure tung oil Non Toxic
After a few days I turn it again on high speeds with a special non toxic Bees wax mix I have developed with manufactures of the products in the mix this really works or kinda burns the wax into the wood for a much longer life span and better waterproofing

sides are Walnut or the type, of wood the pin is made from, the brace in between varies, finished in Tung oil then a satin UV non toxic finish applied to proudly display your pin . some have a slant to the base , as I am deciding on level vs slant for longer life of the pin so can be passed down to generations of family if properly maintained
