claro walnut, Myrtle, refried bean mashers food safe, CrazyBearUSA
Claro Walnut (Juglans hindsii) is a unique species from the Pacific Coast of the USA.
are known for rich color and extraordinary figure that is far superior to Eastern Walnut. Claro Walnut has been favored for high end rifles and shotguns by many over the years. It is commonly used for guitars of various kinds, fine furniture, slab tables, boxes, and high quality turned items. Most of the supply originates in orchards as either production Walnut trees or wind row trees. When orchards are removed, it is our privilege to recycle the beautiful stumps and logs from the trees. Despite its density, Claro Walnut works and finishes well with the use of a grain sealer. It is an unrivalled wood that is in high demand and short supply.
Myrtle wood is renowned throughout the Pacific Northwest for its excellent machining and finishing properties as well as its beautiful color, spicy aroma, and figure. Also known as Bay Laurel, California Olive, Pepper wood, or Spice tree, this versatile hardwood grows only in Oregon and Northernmost California. Colors range drastically even in the same log so that a range of color from golden yellow, green, black, brown, tan, and violet can exist. Each blank is unique, making each project one of a kind. Burl or fiddleback is a rare quality that very few Myrtle trees possess.
This is a old school original style South of the border Latino Style Re-Fried bean mashers
size is base between 4-6 inches handles are 9 inches
This is made out of 100% EPA certified green earth disease free Myrtle /Walnut wood from the USA then 4 coats of FDA approved 100% PURE Tung oil applied food safe
I have upgraded the design to be a threaded 3/4" dowel rod they are about 9" before threading them . the base starts off as a 2'x2"(8/4) piece of wood currently we are offering this limited run in Walnut handles walnut , a 1/4" hole is drilled at top for a leather strap .not pictured but if I have the straps in stock will be included .
some of the threading will turn tight for while or may have a little thread show this is the nature of wood and use of a natural finish as Tung oil, or any finish like it will expand the wood fibers, cells this is what water proofs the masher, in a safe natural manner , the application of 4 coats takes about 2 weeks
The Glue if I use it is a direct food safe and use on my cutting boards as well as my flutes
hand sanded to 320 grit
all you do is wipe them down with a damp cloth maybe a very mild soap and air dry DO NOT DO NOT PUT IN A DISH WASHER OR USE ANY HARSH SOAP DETERGENTS
the Tung oil work to soak into the wood naturally and water proof it for years to come all that is ever needed is another coat of pure Tung oils ordered through fine wood working shops or contact me I can send you some or the links . The Tung oil is applied in 4 coats , using a thin to fat method . I use 100% citrus solvent to thin out the Tung oil this too is non toxic but you should not drink it since it is made from orange peels. I have used both these products for years applying it to some 5000 products.
I ship the mashers with a coat on them to protect the woods during shipping .
when the masher arrives let it sit out for a hour or so then wipe down with a paper towel . Do not store the masher together for first few months if it gets tight to put together use some food safe oil on the threads. if you want keep as one piece and glue up a wood glue is fine or if it loosens up over time glue and tip is use a toothpick to help tighten the masher up.
I have been selling so many of these great products we now offer different woods currently Maple Cherry walnut. with cherry or walnut handles at
